Onwards and Upwards – Becoming an Effective Leader in the EYFS

This interactive course is designed to meet the professional development needs of EYFS leads in schools, including Nursery and Reception teachers leading Early Years class teams. It will strengthen practice and build leadership capacity in this vital phase of education to improve outcomes for the children. Sessions will provide participants with a balance of practical learning including activities to take back into school, and relevant academic research. The course tutors have extensive experience of teaching in the early years, and using coaching skills to develop individuals and teams.
This course builds on the highly successful ‘Leading Progress’ Course and is designed to be delivered online to meet current health guidelines. You will learn:
- What makes an effective and thoughtful leader
- How to make your vision come to life, taking your team with you
- How to get the best from a team, including coaching and supervision
- How to problem solve and manage conflict
- Approaches to prioritising your workload
- Strategies to successfully manage change
- How to look after the wellbeing of yourself and your team

Includes handbook, journal and resources, which will be posted out to participants in advance of the course.
Ruth Mercer is an experienced executive coach, specialising in early years. A former Head teacher of a large maintained nursery school her particular success was in motivating teams and creating a strong learning community.
Sarah Davies is a former Deputy Head, early years teacher and LA advisor, who particularly enjoys supporting the professional development of teachers at different stages of their careers using a collaborative and creative approach.
